STAND UP PADDLE BOARD MAINTENANCE

R-small

You can be assured that all stand up paddle boards by Ripple Boards are well made, durable, and constructed from premium quality materials. But everything lasts longer if well looked after. Here we explain how to care for your Ripple Board including transporting your board, using your board, storing your board, and repairing minor dings and scratches on your board.

 >>> Transporting your stand up paddle board:

  • Put padding on your roof racks. Alternatively, buy a padded paddle board cover (there are lots available online).
  • The board should be strapped to your roof racks upside down, and with the fins towards the front of the car (nose pointing towards the rear of the car). This way, if the board slips backwards while you are driving the fins will catch on the strap.
  • Secure the board using flat straps (not rope).
  • Take extra care loading and unloading your board in windy conditions.

>>> Using your stand up paddle board:

  • Obviously, don’t paddle into rocks or other paddle boards- this can damage the fiberglass and allow water into the foam core.
  • Rinse the board with fresh water after use
  • Never leave the board on the beach in the hot sun, particularly if there is no wind. Store in the shade whenever possible. If no shade is available, cover the board with multiple towels. A board bag does not adequately protect for your board from hot sun, in fact many bags trap heat and cook the board!
  • NB: Ripple Boards are fitted with an air vent that allows air to escape as the board heats up. This helps to make our boards more resilient to the hot Australian temperatures.
  • Never leave the traction pad facing the sun when dry

>>> Storing your stand up paddle:

  • Store in a cool, dry environment.
  • Do not store in a damp board bag. Bags are intended for transportation not full-time storage.

>>> Repairing your stand up paddle board:

  • If your Ripple Board is damaged while in water, remove it immediately. If you were using it in salt water, rinse it in fresh water. Allow it to dry completely before repairing.
  • Minor chips and scratches:
    • Fill with an epoxy resin (sold in most surf shops).
  • Small cracks and dings:
    • Repair using a surfboard fiberglass repair kit (sold in most surf shops).
  • More serious damage should be repaired by a professional.

 >>> Inflating Your SUP

  • Make sure the rubber O ring is secure around the connection between pump hose and board
  • Use the pressure gauge provided and inflate up to 20 psi (although around 16psi is recommended)
  • Avoid pumping in sand, dirt or water as this effects the pumping mechanism.

 >>> Storing Your Inflatable SUP:

  • You can store your iSUP inflated, partially deflated, or fully deflated- it doesn’t matter. You can leave your iSUP inflated for as long as you like, although over time it may gradually lose pressure necessitating a few more pumps of air before use.
  • For very long term storage, it’s best to deflate your board and roll it up loosely. Keep it in a dry, dark place.

 >>> Repairing Your Inflatable SUP:

  • Each Ripple Air Board comes with a repair kit that includes patches of PVC and a tube of PVC contact adhesive. It’s very unlikely that your board will spring a leak, but if it does, here’s what to do:
  • If the leak is from the deck or underside, clean the area thoroughly first, then cut a patch of the required size. Apply glue to both the board and patch and wait until it is dry to the touch. Then apply a second layer of glue to both surfaces. When this is also dry to the touch, press the patch onto the board firmly for 10 minutes, and then maintain the pressure for 24 hours with the use of a weight.
    If the leak is over a seam or rail then we suggest taking your board and repair kit to a professional inflatable boat repairer to do the job for you.
